For generations, a tubewell or handpump drawing from a shallow aquifer provided clean, sweet water to households across rural and peri-urban India and Bangladesh. That assumption is no longer safe. Falling water tables — caused by over-extraction for agriculture, industry, and urban supply — have forced communities to drill deeper. These deeper aquifers, undisturbed for thousands of years, contain naturally occurring arsenic, fluoride, and iron in concentrations that far exceed safe drinking limits.
At the same time, surface-level contamination seeps downward: agricultural fertilisers and pesticides, industrial effluents, inadequately treated sewage, and landfill leachate all find pathways into the water table. A handpump that was clean twenty years ago may today be delivering a cocktail of contaminants to your glass.
The WHO safe limit for arsenic is 10 micrograms per litre (µg/L). Studies in parts of West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh have found groundwater arsenic levels of 200–500 µg/L — 20 to 50 times the safe limit. Chronic arsenic exposure is odourless, tasteless, and colourless. You cannot detect it without a test. Its effects accumulate silently over years before appearing as skin lesions, nerve damage, and cancers.
